Although Naples is a bicycle-friendly city, most riders are still familiar with the dangers of navigating roadways on a daily basis. It’s not uncommon for riders to have a ‘near miss’ or ‘close call’ story to share with friends and family members. Unfortunately, collisions with automobiles often leave cyclists in the hospital or worse. A bicycle rider doesn’t have the benefit of air bags, steel cages and safety belts. They’re truly at the mercy of other drivers on the roadway.
Share the Road with Cyclists
Many bicycle crashes happen because other drivers aren’t properly sharing the road. Drivers who merge into or abruptly stop in front of bicycle riders aren’t paying attention. They may be distracted or just not checking their blind spots. Bicycles are much smaller than cars, so drivers need to be vigilant about their distance and proximity to riders. Like many problems that can arise in the workplace, victims may be unwilling to come forward or report the harassment for fear of losing their jobs. Although your employer can’t legally retaliate against you, the prospect of losing one’s job during a tough economic climate can be downright scary. If you believe you’re being sexually harassed, you should contact an experienced employment law attorney as soon as possible. An attorney can make sure your rights are being protected as you navigate the process of filing a sexual harassment complaint. Listed below are just a few of the many forms of sexual harassment that can occur in a workplace.
Different Types of Sexual Harassment
When Your Supervisor is Harassing You
In many companies, it may be standard operating procedure to file a complaint with one’s supervisor. Victims run into trouble when their supervisors are actually the ones perpetrating the sexual harassment. In this case, your attorney can advise you on how and where to file an initial complaint. It may be necessary to go outside of the traditional chain of command.
Handling Sexual Harassment in Southwest Florida
If you are a victim of sexual harassment in the workplace, contact an attorney first. Your next step will be to file an internal complaint with your employer. It may be necessary to check your employee handbook to find out if your company has a formal procedure in place for handling such reports. Email works well for filing initial complaints, because you will have something dated in writing. If a situation isn’t corrected at the company level, it will be necessary to file a charge of discrimination with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the Florida Commission on Human Relations (FCHR). Upon completion of initial state and federal investigations with these agencies, you will be able to file a lawsuit against your employer.

Last Friday afternoon, a two-vehicle wreck sent four people to the hospital. The crash happened in North Hardee County at E. Broward Street and U.S. 17. According to Fox Four News, two of the victims were from Naples. A 92-year-old driver, Lawrence Barhorst, was at the stop sign on E. Broward Street at the intersection for U.S. 17. He apparently made a left turn in front of a northbound automobile. Two people from each car were injured in the crash.
Four Injured in Hardee County Crash
The two automobiles collided, and the driver of the other car, 34-year-old Brooke Macias of Naples, suffered from serious injuries. Her 14-year-old passenger reportedly suffered from minor injuries. Barhorst and his 83-year-old passenger, Mary Johns, were both seriously injured. According to officials with the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) charges are pending in this case.
NHTSA’s Driving Safely While Aging Gracefully Guide
Very little information has been released regarding the investigation of this Hardee County crash. Although charges are pending, there’s no word on what those charges are. Law enforcement officials are likely exploring age of the driver as a potential factor in this crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA’s) “Driving Safely While Aging Gracefully” campaign is aimed at raising awareness about age-related changes and how they impact driving skills in the older adult population. Additionally, they offer a guide that is specifically designed at empowering older drivers who lead very independent lives. Since driving is synonymous with independence for many older Americans, empowerment through education is of the utmost importance.
Empowerment Through Education
The “Driving Safely While Aging Gracefully” guide offers older drivers information on how to recognize symptoms of declining vision, declining physical fitness and decreased attention and reaction times. The guide also offers older drivers great solutions and resources for coping with the effects of aging. The last thing anybody wants to do is put other people in harm’s way. The NHTSA recommends learning about the physical effects of aging and coping strategies to remain a safe driver on U.S. roadways. The team at Weldon & Rothman, PL wishes the injured victims involved in this crash speedy and full recoveries.
